“1st HabiJax Green Home in Jacksonville”
First Coast News, July 2008, Deanna Fene

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Weeks ago it was just a dream with a frame. Tonya Daniels, a single mother of two, helped build the HabiJax home. She put 300-hours of sweat equity into it and now it's finished.

"It feels great. I have never been so happy in my life. This has been the biggest accomplishment of my life besides having my children," said Daniels.

Daniels is the new owner of the HabiJax home and it is the first green house by Habitat for Humanity in Jacksonville.

"This house is deed certified. It's our first among many to go after this so we're excited about it for many different reasons," said Roger Cortie with HabiJax.

The new home is good for the environment since it's more energy efficient and good for the new owner.

"It's an energy efficient home which will help me as far as cost of lights and water," said Daniels. "My bill will be a lot less."

This is not only the first of seven green houses for HabiJax, but this house was built by women.

Women Build sponsored the house.

Groups of women from all over the city came together to build this for a woman, wanting to fulfill a dream and now she has. "This is my first house and I thank God for it. It's a good feeling. A great feeling."
